Engineer-to-Order (ETO ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

ERP Systems and the ETO Manufacturing Market Part Three: User Recommendations

Companies that are project manufacturers, engineer-to-order (ETO), build-to-order, jobbing shops or contract manufacturers should think carefully when selecting an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Given the maturity of the ERP market, its ongoing consolidation, and that fact that competitive advantage is hard enough for manufacturers to find, they should not compromise on their requirements.

Equally important, they need to know how much work remains and cost to complete , as well as what is left to spend in order to deliver the project, as an anticipation of profit or loss before the project is complete. They have to be able to report revenues on the percentage-completed basis, Read More

ERP Systems and the ETO Manufacturing Market Part Two: ETO versus Repetitive Differences

ETO-oriented (engineer-to-order) systems must facilitate the near real time transfer of information and complex product knowledge for collaboration across the extended enterprise. It should especially be suited to organizations that seek to maintain complex selling relationships, such as businesses whose procurement and sales functions rely on subcontractors, channel partnerships or a distributed sales force.

Further, in order to commission a project, consumables and sundry items, tools, jigs, and fixtures may well be required. Often, on surface, this may appear to be supported by a volume-based ERP system that recognizes that a certain tool must be available to run an operation step in the routing on a certain machine in the factory. Thus, to remove any confusion, here is an example of making machine tools. When the time comes to Read More

Caution! Will A Traditional ERP System Help You Deliver Projects?

Companies who build specifically for a customer have unique requirements that are often not understood or dealt with well by some ERP vendors, particularly in the mid-market, who think that systems designed around volume manufacturing fit everywhere.

From Problems to Ideas through to Innovation

Unsurprisingly, research shows that the majority of companies see their future predicated on how well they can innovate. However, just throwing IT technology at issues in the hope that innovation will happen is not viable. Ideas are ephemeral and easily crushed within the wrong environment. Creating a suitable culture, allied with a well implemented idea management approach combined with strong leadership, is required.
