Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Best Practices for a Data Warehouse on Oracle Database 11g

Companies are recognizing the value of an enterprise data warehouse (EDW) that provides a single 360-degree view of the business. But to ensure that your EDW performs and scales well, you need to get three things right: the hardware configuration, the data model, and the data loading process. Learn how designing these three things correctly can help you scale your EDW without constantly tuning or tweaking the system.

Intelligent Manufacturing Systems: Beating the Odds, Mightily - Part 2

Part 1 of this blog series explained IQMS’ ebullience and growth despite a hostile and depressed environment, especially in manufacturing. IQMS attributes its continued success to its strategy of being the single source for virtually everything a target customer might need, including software development, sales and implementation services, training, and customer service and technical support

My belief is that the reliance solely on Oracle’s database might, in the long term, limit IQMS’ market opportunity, especially within smaller companies that are standardizing on Microsoft SQL Server . The vendor claims that prospective customers are more focused on the solution than on the technology, and that the database system doesn''t matter. Fine, but maybe also Read More

How to Comply with Data Security Regulations

A remote data backup solution can be compliant with almost any international, federal, or state data protection regulation—and can be compliant with the common caveats of most data security laws by providing functionality like data encryption and secure media control. And, as some regulations require files to be archived for several years, you can create a routine that archives files you select for backup and storage.

Considerations for Owning versus Outsourcing Data Center Physical Infrastructure

When faced with the decision of upgrading an existing data center, building new, or leasing space in a retail colocation data center, there are both quantitative and qualitative differences to consider. The 10-year TCO may favor upgrading or building over outsourcing; however, this paper demonstrates that the economics may be overwhelmed by a business’ sensitivity to cash flow, cash crossover point, deployment timeframe, data center life expectancy, regulatory requirements, and other strategic factors. This paper discusses how to assess these key factors to help make a sound decision.

Increasing Sales and Reducing Costs across the Supply Chain-Focusing on Data Quality and Master Data Management

Nearly half of all US companies have serious data quality issues. The problem is that most are not thinking about their business data as being valuable. But in reality data has become—in some cases—just as valuable as inventory. The solution to most organizational data challenges today is to combine a strong data quality program with a master data management (MDM) program, helping businesses leverage data as an asset.

The Advantages of Row- and Rack-oriented Cooling Architectures for Data Centers

The traditional room-oriented approach to data center cooling has limitations in next-generation data centers. Next-generation data centers must adapt to changing requirements, support high and variable power density, and reduce power consumption and other operating costs. Find out how row- and rack-oriented cooling architectures reduce total cost of ownership (TCO), and address the needs of next-generations data centers.

The deterministic geometry of rack-oriented architecture gives rise to predictable performance that can be completely characterized by the manufacturer and are totally immune to the affects of room geometry or other room constraints. This allows simple specification of power density and design to implement the specified density. The specification of power density is defined in detail in APC White Paper #120, Guidelines for Specification of Data Center Power Density . The principal Read More
