Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

Can Webplan Reconcile Planning and Execution? Part One: Event Summary

According to the early signs, it appears that key elements of Webplan's business plan are producing results with dividends. These elements involve positioning itself as a response management player with new pricing and packaging that provides an aggressive entry point and fixed priced, fixed duration implementations; leveraging partnerships with enterprise applications vendors; and investing in field operations in North America and Asia with an expanded distribution model to include both direct and indirect global sales.

scm resource planning articles  have supply chain management (SCM) systems, most continue to use inopportune batch reports and pesky spreadsheets to manage their operations performance. These have proven to be inefficient and error-prone methods of supporting decision-making, and result in a reliance on educated guesswork rather than on accurate dynamic analysis in order to align decisions with strategic objectives. For that reason, Webplan software intends to do for manufacturing or operational decision-making what some business Read More

Bridging the Reality Gap Between Planning and Execution Part One: The Problem

At sites where both planning and execution modules are stand-alone implementations, neither deliver enough benefit because there are almost always manual connections and processes between these two crucial supply chain management (SCM) areas. Yet, planning and execution in the supply chain are slowly but surely converging because no plan is useful if it cannot be executed.

scm resource planning articles  between these two crucial SCM areas. To refresh our memory, supply chain planning (SCP) applications are designed to provide forward-looking predictions of events with probabilities for the future (as almost no company knows enough about any business initiative to proceeds with 100 percent certainty), which can encompass medium and long-term time horizons. Given the fact that decisions should be based on information, an SCP application suite sits on top of a transactional enterprise system to provide Read More

Demand Planning: Optimizing Operations across the Supply Chain

Demand planning applications can help manufacturers establish baseline sales forecasts and perform analysis to improve resource usage. They can also help manufacturers optimize pricing capabilities and better understand their markets. How to Evaluate a Sales and Operation Planning System

The features available in today’s sales and operations planning (SOP) systems make these systems indispensable assets for an organization. Reporting tools and graphical representations are just a couple of these key features. Find out what else to look for in an SOP system.

Integration of these two systems gives organizations the flexibility to modify data in the SOP system if certain organizational objectives are not being met. For example, a sales manager might need to change the sales forecast figure of a certain product in order to meet organizational objectives for that product. With the two systems integrated, instead of logging into the SCM system to make this change, it can be made directly in the SOP system, and the information Read More

10 Key Steps to Effective HR Succession Planning

Two forces are driving organizations to consider succession planning as a component of overall strategy: the aging workforce and a shortfall in labor skills. Both factors will only become more pressing as time goes on.
