Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Demand-driven Planning in Manufacturing

Cover-time planning (CTP) is a "pull" system, but with the intent of planning and not merely waiting for the execution time to act.

scm manufacturing resource planning  and supply chain management (SCM) vendors have been professing lean or demand-driven functionality, most of them still support some nuggets of pseudo-JIT to accommodate mass customization. However, rather than reducing inventory across the entire supply chain, just supporting kanbans or vendor managed inventory (VMI) to push inventory elsewhere (e.g., suppliers) is a far cry from truly supporting lean or demand-driven manufacturing. On the other hand, MRP should not be discounted as useless just like Read More

PeopleSoft Gathers Manufacturing and SCM Wherewithal Part Three: The Manufacturing Industry

Even before the mega merger, PeopleSoft had already set it sights on a bigger manufacturing presence. PeopleSoft’s acquisition of mid-to-large ERP system developer J.D. Edwards this summer, and most recently demand flow and lean manufacturing software solution from JCIT, might indicate some deep though process rather than a number of impulse initiatives from the past.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in a Nutshell

In this blog, we want to make readers more familiar with the logic behind our Evaluation Centers on our Web site by categorizing them—and, at the same time, we want to represent our understanding of manufacturing and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems classification in general. We did not reinvent the wheel, but we are one of the few companies offering software selection services that

You probably already guessed that we have a knowledge base for that, which is called ERP for Distribution . If you are neither producing nor selling what others produce, you probably are a service company and think you don’t need an ERP. Before you start looking for something else, let’s take a look at the definition for “resource” on Wikipedia: “A resource is any physical or virtual entity of limited availability, or anything Read More

Master Requirement Planning and Master Production Scheduling Software: Hard Facts Part Two: Materials Requirement Planning and Master Production Scheduling

Most of the manufacturing software vendors have planning and scheduling software which assume either infinite production capacity for calculating quantities of raw material and work in progress (WIP) requirements or infinite quantities of raw and WIP materials for calculating production capacity. There are many problems with this approach. This paper discusses the pitfalls of this approach and how to avoid these by making sure that the software you buy indeed takes into account finite quantities of required materials as well as finite capacities of work centers in your manufacturing facility.

Sales & Operations Planning: A Two-part Journey to a Bigger Bottom Line

This whitepaper demonstrates how you can positively impact your bottom line through improved sales and operations planning (S&OP), defined as "continuously balancing supply and demand, while connecting the impact of operational decisions to your financial plan." In this regard, S&OP cannot be talked about in isolation. It includes elements of demand planning, supply planning, and budgeting. Its purpose is to create the demand-supply balance essential to guiding operational decisions that have been evaluated against the financial context. Effectively executed, S&OP will deliver improved inventory turns and margins, leading to increased revenue, higher customer satisfaction, and better use of capital. Download to learn more today.

Acquisition of or merger with SCP vendors remains the most expedient method for ERP and other vendors to add these capabilities to their suites. Although i2 and Manugistics could arguably be placed outside the best-of-breed category due to expansions of their product suites, such as e-procurement and CRM, their core expertise remains centered in SCP. Additions to their suites should be encouraged as Read More
