Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

The 'Joy' Of Enterprise Systems Implementations Part 1: Inexorable Statistics

We take the liberty to expand further on the findings of a report, which was recently released by a renowned research organization, and which pinpoints enterprise applications implementations’ dissatisfactions in no uncertain terms. One may expect even more bad news in the future given the intricacy of collaborative inter-enterprise business.

scm failures food business  leading supply chain management (SCM) and customer relationship management (CRM) vendors were also implicated in malfunctioning of the best-of-breed solution. The result was a free for all' finger pointing rage. What has generally not been known for sure though was the more exact percentage of failed implementations. Vendors and consultants, on one hand, would argue that these were mere individual cases out of thousands of implementations, and that the bad perception is mere a product of media's Read More

What Could Process Manufacturers Do Better in PLM?

Part 1 of my recent blog series, Filling the Holes and Breaking Down Artificial Walls in a Process PLM Solution Set, established that the product lifecycle management (PLM) software market for process industries (i.e., food @ beverage, life sciences, chemicals, paints, consumer products, etc.) has not been well-defined as compared to its counterparts in the discrete widgets manufacturing and

With integrated UOM and currency conversions, users no longer have to worry about inaccuracies in spreadsheets or bolt-on workarounds, which minimizes the chance of late-in-the-cycle approval failures and drives bottom-line cost savings. New Materials and Suppliers Introduction Lower-cost materials or alternate sources of supply often require sourcing and approving new materials or suppliers. This too would appear to be a straightforward proposition. Read More

Production Intelligence--Improving Production by Filling a Traditional Gap

Enterprises understand the value of integration. One area that has been ignored is the plant. Plant systems and corporate systems must be complementary and leverage each other to provide their maximum value. Production intelligence provides both integration and valuable information which is not available in either type of system.

scm failures food business  the corporate systems (ERP, SCM, CRMS, etc.) and the plant systems (MES, LIMS, maintenance, etc.) As with any integration gap, the value of both sets of systems cannot be fully leveraged without integration. We are seeing a relatively new set of applications aimed at both integrating the plant and corporate systems plus providing an integrated view not available from either set of systems. Production intelligence is improving plant operations. What IS Production Intelligence? Systems in the typical plant Read More
