Engineer-to-Order (ETO ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

The Trap of Accountancy Systems; When to Move on to ERP

The differences between ERP and accountancy solutions are huge. Accountancy solutions help with financial management and statutory reporting, but do little to streamline or control operational activities.

Modern manufacturers are now selecting—sometimes mixing—push- and pull-based manufacturing control philosophies, to ensure that customer service is maintained without drowning in unnecessary stock, inventory, and finished goods. Let''s remind ourselves that cash flow, not profit, is often the cause of the demise of an enterprise. What does an accountancy system do to maximize throughput and order velocity on your shop Read More

What happened with ERP is that the definition of the core system extended as complementary functionality was combined with it. As the footprint expanded, it deserved a new name. This is similar to what has happened with Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) suites. In the final analysis, PDM will Read More

Scheduling Resource Demand in a Concurrent Engineering Environment

Manufacturers of capital equipment and highly engineered products face design, production, and delivery obstacles. The most challenging of these activities is scheduling projects and resource demand in a concurrent engineering environment. Learn about a resource scheduling tool that can allow you to put demand on materials, work-centers, and labor as soon as it is known—so you can deliver projects on time and on budget.

However, it is still tied to the overall schedule by being tied to task #6. Therefore, concurrent engineering on the other parts of the project can continue and be scheduled while making the frame. Some ERP vendors´ answer to this problem is to create Parts/BOMs/Routings during estimating or for engineering rather than using project scheduling. This approach is ineffective. Read More
