Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

Preparing for Product Development in Process Manufacturing

Combining process industry–oriented product lifecycle management capabilities with process manufacturing–oriented enterprise resource planning ones can help alleviate many of the challenges particular to the process manufacturers, especially in the areas of product development and regulatory compliance.

manufacturing process definition  in Process or Process Manufacturing Software: A Primer , what the process manufacturing industry lacks in glamour, it certainly makes up for in complexity. Traditionally, manufacturing is divided into two categories: process and discrete (if one is not counting hybrid, mixed-mode environments). Many differences exist between the two environments, but most differences can be grouped into one of two areas: 1) those differences derived from material issues, and 2) those differences derived from production Read More

Managing Process Manufacturing Using Microsoft Dynamics AX

Process Manufacturing Software: A Primer

This article defines process manufacturing; discusses its formulation, packaging, and pricing issues; talks about interfaces; and provides cautions and caveats.

Ingredients, particularly in the chemical industry, are not added at the same time. Typically, there may be some milling, more ingredients; blending, more ingredients; and chemical reactions, more ingredients. You would expect that the ERP software would integrate the act of adding an ingredient to the process with the station/step/resource in the process. Finally, there is the matter of data Read More

SAP Manufacturing-Manufacturing Intelligence Dashboards

Adaptiveness in the manufacturing sector depends on being able to push decision making to the shop floor. But that’s often easier said than done. However, manufacturing intelligence dashboards aggregate content from the full range of manufacturing systems into a single view of operations. These role-specific dashboards thus enable employees to manage manufacturing performance, and respond quickly to changes.

Product Life Cycle Management (PLM) in Process Part 1 Proven in Discrete, Ready to Blossom in Process

Process industry companies could benefit from many of the PLM concepts that have accrued to discrete industries. But PLM has had minimum penetration into the process industries. Why?

manufacturing process definition  addition, the link into manufacturing within a process company is complex with the role of PLM stretching into the plant environment. Process companies require a standard process specification (based upon S88 and S95 standards) in order to create consistent product worldwide. While there appears to be overlap between some PLM functionality between discrete and process vendors, most PLM products are based on underlying discrete assumptions that don''t work in process. The Discrete PLM suppliers remain Read More
