Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

What Are Manufacturing Execution Systems?

A manufacturing execution system (MES) can be defined as a collection of business processes providing event-by-event, real-time execution of planned production requirements. However, market ambiguity and functional overlap with enterprise resource planning systems obscure what an MES can bring to an enterprise.

manufacturing execution systems  Are Manufacturing Execution Systems? Originally published - November 29th, 2005 Revised and updated March 5th, 2008 Plant execution software systems have many different scopes, forms, and formats, and they mean different things to different folks. Although plant execution software is used widely in a number of industries, it is rarely described similarly, and its functions are hardly ever identical. An execution system used at an electronics discrete manufacturing facility is similar only in concept Read More

The Challenges of Integrating Enterprise Resource Planning and Manufacturing Execution Systems

While enterprise applications solutions are moving closer to the plant floor, and plant-level systems are moving closer to enterprise planning application functionality, these systems will not likely converge anytime soon, because they use different technologies and have different user requirements.

manufacturing execution systems  Enterprise Resource Planning and Manufacturing Execution Systems Though vital for effective plant floor management, plant-level execution systems have rarely taken “front and center” on the enterprise solution stage. Management has often treated production support needs such as manufacturing execution systems (MES) as a necessary, but very low, priority. However, the detriment of information silos resulting from poor data-sharing has long been felt, and now the push to demolish information silos is Read More

SAP Manufacturing-Manufacturing Intelligence Dashboards

Adaptiveness in the manufacturing sector depends on being able to push decision making to the shop floor. But that’s often easier said than done. However, manufacturing intelligence dashboards aggregate content from the full range of manufacturing systems into a single view of operations. These role-specific dashboards thus enable employees to manage manufacturing performance, and respond quickly to changes.

Best Manufacturing Scheduling Systems

The market place is awash with many kinds of manufacturing scheduling systems. Due to the dynamic nature of the manufacturing shop floor, it is of utmost importance that a manufacturing scheduling system can take care of these dynamic conditions.

manufacturing execution systems  Today, most of the manufacturing planning and scheduling systems take two hours or sometimes more than a day to generate a plan or schedule. By the time the plan is generated, it becomes outdated as the input data may have changed. Essentially this means your schedule is based on stale data and not on fresh and current data. Moreover, the user cannot generate plans on the same input data to create scenarios to choose the best plan for current needs. If the scheduling system is fast enough (say, within 5 Read More

Testing Dark Pool Trading Systems

Dark Pool Trading Systems, used by institutional traders trading in large volumes, help get more liquidity and lower transaction cost. Despite these benefits, there are a few issues, such as inadequate transparency, regulatory requirements, and uniform information access to investors. Considering these systems’ complexity, it’s important that functional testing, as well as gateway and performance testing, be done.
