Lean Tools and Practices that Eliminate Manufacturing Waste
A number of lean manufacturing tools and practices have long been used to reduce manufacturing waste. These include the five S's, visual controls, standardized

Accordingly, TPM and other advanced enterprise asset management (EAM) options increase equipment reliability, and thus improve availability, reduce downtime, reduce product scrap (and wasted time managing that scrap), and increase machine tolerances (and consequently quality). As a further aid, diagnostics management features can automatically identify situations where the current maintenance strategy is

Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

The Next R(E)volution of Lean

By seeing a business as a "value system" for customers, companies can shift lean strategic priorities towards growth-oriented targets instead of cost-cutting. Instead of squeezing additional margins to boost the bottom line, lean philosophy can increase demand response and sales, while maintaining and lowering cost per unit—thus enabling lower prices, a competitive edge, and more business.

lean strategy and tpm lean manufacturing  do not. Executing a Lean strategy is similar in many respects to implementing a total quality management (TQM) strategy or a Six Sigma program across the enterprise. These programs have been implemented successfully in many organizations. The difference seems to be that Lean is more likely than TQM or Six Sigma to be initiated without a top-down approach or clear business objectives. The key tool that is missing in the strategic arsenal for Lean is a framework for strategic planning and tactical Read More

PeopleSoft Building Muscles To Overcome The Rough Patch Part 4: Challenges and User Recommendations

It appears that a real magic bullet to attract smaller enterprises is yet to be produced, although the company has successfully addressed marketing and selling to both large and smaller enterprises. All in all, although on the right track, PeopleSoft has to be careful that it does not overstretch itself and lose focus going forward.

To that end, as the company is apparently keen to change the competitive landscape, and having a huge pile of cash, it still has to do a much better job at disseminating the message and making the market aware and serious about its manufacturing expertise. Each scenario also highlights a point-of-use strategy of placing components in a floor stock area for a work cell, which must be reflected in BOM information for the warehouse source of components. The diagram for each scenario illustrates the bill of material information and the work cell information. The diagrams also highlight sales orders Read More

Lean Manufacturing: A Primer

Lean manufacturing emphasizes the minimization of the amount of all the resources (including time) used in the various activities of the enterprise. The typical areas of hidden waste are over-production, waiting, transportation, over-processing, motion, excessive inventory, and defective units.

lean strategy and tpm lean manufacturing  prospects inquired tentatively about lean capabilities, now they seem to be increasingly requesting these. An ARC Advisory Group 's strategy report from 2004 suggested that today 36 percent of US manufacturers and 70 percent of UK manufacturers are using lean as their primary improvement methodology , which should show how prominent lean thinking has become. Many of these companies may not yet be involved in full-blown lean manufacturing, but they are at least using some lean tools and principles as Read More
