Moving Beyond Lean Manufacturing to a Lean Supply Chain
Most lean manufacturing deployments target production operations, but can also be extended to other supply chain processes. To realize the multiplicative

lean strategy and lean manufacturing companies  chain Profitably building a lean supply chain network requires that manufacturing operations synchronize with customer demand and produce acceptable quality products as needed. A manufacturing strategy that is based on reduced variability, production to demand, waste elimination, and optimal cycle time will drive over all supply chain success. Manufacturers that cannot control variability will not be able to move toward lean demand driven replenishment strategies cost effectively. Where the Real Value Is

Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

Lean Tools and Practices that Eliminate Manufacturing Waste

A number of lean manufacturing tools and practices have long been used to reduce manufacturing waste. These include the five S's, visual controls, standardized work, mistake proofing, total productive maintenance, cellular manufacturing, single-digit setup, pull systems, sequencing, activity-based costing, and leveled production.

Accordingly, TPM and other advanced enterprise asset management (EAM) options increase equipment reliability, and thus improve availability, reduce downtime, reduce product scrap (and wasted time managing that scrap), and increase machine tolerances (and consequently quality). As a further aid, diagnostics management features can automatically identify situations where the current maintenance strategy is Read More

Lean Manufacturing: A Primer

Lean manufacturing emphasizes the minimization of the amount of all the resources (including time) used in the various activities of the enterprise. The typical areas of hidden waste are over-production, waiting, transportation, over-processing, motion, excessive inventory, and defective units.

lean strategy and lean manufacturing companies  prospects inquired tentatively about lean capabilities, now they seem to be increasingly requesting these. An ARC Advisory Group 's strategy report from 2004 suggested that today 36 percent of US manufacturers and 70 percent of UK manufacturers are using lean as their primary improvement methodology , which should show how prominent lean thinking has become. Many of these companies may not yet be involved in full-blown lean manufacturing, but they are at least using some lean tools and principles as Read More

Enhancing Lean Practices: Lean Adoption in the Industrial Machinery and Components Industry

Customer churn rates are higher than ever: although businesses say they are devoted to loyalty, their management systems and budgets do not support that claim. But in a landscape of similar products, cutting down on defection—or churn—is vital. There are in fact four steps to improving loyalty and retention which, if focused on the appropriate customers, will improve profitability.

Begin at the End: A Good Lean Strategy Starts with Defining Your Ultimate Goal

You know the statistics—lean can shorten your lead times, reduce inventories, cut operating costs, free up resources, and more. But countless surveys have confirmed that most lean initiatives fail to deliver expected and needed results. Why? Are successes confined to a restricted list of industry sectors? Are only "lean experts" capable of leading an organization through a successful implementation?
