Integrating Lean Practices and ERP

Many organizations are undertaking some form of lean initiative, but if one were to ask one hundred different people, one would probably different explanations from each person. With a variety of methods, techniques, and terms bandied about, many are forced to use the same definition that the late Justice Potter Stewart used for pornography: “I know it when I see it.” Shop floor practices that move inventory to the point of consumption, like kanban, are also associated with lean. But what really is lean? And does it go beyond the shop floor to impacts all areas of the business?

i-Lean

Chiron's flagship product, i-Lean, is a logistics modeling and design tool built for warehousing, manufacturing, and retail environments. It employs a pull methodology used in conjunction with a lean inventory management strategy within a distribution or manufacturing facility. This is accomplished by integrating dozens of variables to generate inventory management solutions down to the stock-keeping unit (SKU) level. In addition to deriving operational recommendations, i-Lean lays out the cost components of each solution. The application establishes the foundation for a warehouse management system implementation, and supports long-term inventory management maintenance programs. Using product demand, volumetrics, vendor lead time, material handling costs, and additional variables, i-Lean can make recommendations for material flows, inventory levels, and storage media types. It can also recommend cycle and safety stock levels along with bin sizes, as well as provide slotting recommendations. Annual operating costs can be recommended, and what-if comparisons of the costs and benefits of different inventory management strategies are supported. The results of an analysis run can be used in the Warehouse Design and Slotting Analysis features of i-Lean. These features use demand or actual ordering statistics for each part (such as order frequency or average order size) to recommend how a warehouse should be zoned, and how each part should be stored.

Overcoming the Barrier of Traditional Accounting in Lean Environments

Manufacturers of all sizes are more efficient, better managed, and more profitable because of lean—yet this improvement has plateaued at many companies. What’s holding up the progress of lean? The real problem is that as lean evolves and spreads beyond the plant floor, its conflict with traditional accounting is escalating—and becoming more dangerous to the financial health of manufacturers.

Moving Beyond Lean Manufacturing to a Lean Supply Chain

Most lean manufacturing deployments target production operations, but can also be extended to other supply chain processes. To realize the multiplicative benefits of real time information and reduced inventory, companies must assess their production environment and supply chain activities.

Modern supply chain strategies driven by lean manufacturing tools and concepts will distinguish the performance-driven enterprise. Traditional manual pull systems fall short when applied to a networked supply chain model for the following reasons: Lack of visibility across the networked supply chain No standard traceable collaboration medium Manual systems are slower by nature, and more error prone Manual approaches Read More

Going Lean Step By Step with IFS Applications

In the relentless pursuit of profitability and competitiveness, more and more companies are turning to lean manufacturing to reduce or eliminate waste in their production processes. Once confined to the automotive industry, lean principles are becoming standard operating procedure in many industries today. The reason is simple: When implemented with a good performance management system, lean principles have a proven track record of operational and strategic success, which ultimately translates into increased value to the end customer. This paper illustrates how IFS Applications supports lean principles, particularly in the many manufacturing environments that require both rate-based (takt-driven) and order-based shop-floor execution.

Lean Operations: Software Strategies for Manufacturing's New Normal

Throughout the 2000s, manufacturers were giving up on Lean. A “build it and we can sell it” attitude was adopted. Manufacturers responded to the 2008 economic collapse with aggressive cuts to inventory and head count. The worst is over. This research examines what’s changed and how to intelligently ramp up production and inventory, with an eye towards recapturing core Lean principles while also adopting a new technology.

Nine Ways to Use ERP to Make the Manufacturing Supply Chain Lean

There are entire books and thorough training and certification processes devoted to lean supply chain practices. But within any manufacturing environment, there are a few relatively simple steps that will help any enterprise make its supply chain lean. In this article, we will touch on these simple measures—measures that any company can take.

lean methodology roa  the Manufacturing Supply Chain Lean Originally published - March 9, 2009 Lean in a supply chain context is about a holistic view of procurement, manufacturing distribution, and sales order processing. This means that some level of enterprise technology is necessary to view the organization in an integrated context instead of as functional islands. However, before technology can facilitate the lean supply chain, manufacturing executives need to start thinking in lean supply chain terms. We will be Read More

Front-office Lean-Taking Lean Manufacturing Beyond the Shop Floor

Lean manufacturing practices are employed to some degree on almost every manufacturing floor, but many companies aren't realizing the real benefits of lean by bringing lean to their front-office operations. Here are a few tips on lean office operations.

lean methodology roa  Some companies have formal lean programs, employing individuals with black belts in Six Sigma (a system of practices for measuring defects and improving quality, and a methodology to reduce defect levels, with Black Belts being the professionals who can explain these philosophies and principles to companies), and other process control skills. Other manufacturers simply employ techniques on the shop floor ranging from kanban events, poka yoke, cellular workflows, motion studies, and tightened inventory Read More

Implementing Kanban Alternatives in Lean Manufacturing

Kanban—the Japanese term for physical or visual signs that trigger replenishment, which can be a useful part of lean manufacturing—is not a good fit in some situations.
