Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Manufacturing Strategy: An Adaptive Perspective

Adaptive manufacturing enables companies to produce goods efficiently and manage variability proactively. However, it must be managed as an end-to-end, closed-loop process with tight linkages between manufacturing applications, adjacent enterprise applications, and—most importantly—the technology behind these applications. Such integrated networks enable the process visibility and collaboration capabilities that, ultimately, are the key to building an adaptive manufacturing enterprise.

Preparing for Product Development in Process Manufacturing

Combining process industry–oriented product lifecycle management capabilities with process manufacturing–oriented enterprise resource planning ones can help alleviate many of the challenges particular to the process manufacturers, especially in the areas of product development and regulatory compliance.

lean manufacturing strategies lcd  vessels and piping are cleansed to prevent product contamination. A classic example is a brewery, which has to mix and brew a variety of product flavors, handling hundreds or thousands of actions involving the complexities of pipes, tanks, and supplies. When one type of beer is being made, the tank being used to produce it is no longer available for other operations. Effective process enterprise resource planning (ERP) software needs to be able to control how long it takes to fill the tank, determine Read More

Manufacturing Software for an Integrated Steel Plant

Manufacturing processes for an integrated steel plant typically encompass three distinct types of manufacturing: flow manufacturing, process manufacturing, and mill manufacturing, meaning that such a plant is effectively a mixed-mode manufacturer. Software systems for these manufacturers' diverse needs are of critical importance. Learn about specific software capabilities you should be looking for.

SaaS-ing the Manufacturing Opportunity

The software as a service (SaaS) delivery model is here to stay, and most vendors have noticed. Recently, the endorsement for SaaS in the realm of manufacturing enterprise resource planning has come from a veteran vendor and SaaS pioneer.

lean manufacturing strategies lcd  ing the Manufacturing Opportunity The Need for New Delivery Models Recently ordained the topic du jour , it is now apparent that software as a service (SaaS)—also known as on-demand, hosted delivery—models of enterprise applications are not the passing fads that the Y2K or dot-com phenomena of the late 1990s were. The rationale thereof, however, depends on whom one asks for an opinion (that is, whether the opinion comes from someone of the burgeoning SaaS camp or from the traditional and still Read More
