ERP for Mill-based and Material Converting Environments

The ERP for Mill-based and Material Converting Environments knowledge base focuses on a range of industrial activities that add value to raw materials by processing them into a form suitable for further manufacturing or for immediate end-use. These activities include traditional mills that turn grain into flour or extract sucrose from sugar cane; the spinning and weaving mills of the textiles and carpets sectors; the rolling plants of steel, aluminum, and other metals semi-fabricators; to the continuous outputs of paper and board mills.

Demand-Driven Strategies for Complex Manufacturing

Many manufacturing companies have adopted or are considering the adoption of a demand-driven strategy. However, if you want to be demand-driven, you aren’t going to achieve it without adopting many of the tools, techniques, and principles that commonly reside within all of them. Some philosophies require a more intense re-engineering of processes and products than others. This paper addresses the various components and strategies for becoming a demand-driven organization, and how Cincom’s solutions can help you achieve that goal.

Isn''t Lean really just a more generic term for the Toyota Production System'' It has been said that Flow Manufacturing is very similar to Lean Manufacturing or even Agile Manufacturing, not to mention several other manufacturing techniques. However, some might argue that the primary focus of Lean Manufacturing is the elimination of waste, and that the principle focus of Agile Manufacturing is flexibility. It is clear that Flow Manufacturing (or DFT) certainly has both of thes Read More

Compliant Manufacturing Operations in Life Sciences Companies: Compliant Operations to Lead the Competition

For many life sciences organizations, a key impediment to compliant manufacturing operations remains the disconnect between enterprise and plant systems. This results in unsynchronized business processes and inadequate use of resources, which in turn increases the risk of non-compliance and inadequate quality of finished products. Find out why simply connecting systems is not enough to fully overcome these challenges.

jit flow manufacturing white paper  Six Sigma initiatives, just-in-time (JIT) processes, and other continuous improvement efforts, you can optimize day-to-day operations, eliminate waste, reduce operating costs, and lower inventories to ensure sustained operational performance. Consider this: Using decision-support tools that enable you to simulate and compare alternative manufacturing scenarios, you can more easily match production rates to optimal production targets. You can map production activities to customer orders more effectively, t Read More

Lean Manufacturing: A Primer

Lean manufacturing emphasizes the minimization of the amount of all the resources (including time) used in the various activities of the enterprise. The typical areas of hidden waste are over-production, waiting, transportation, over-processing, motion, excessive inventory, and defective units.

Traditionally, manufacturers have used the concept of economic order quantity (EOQ), which is also known as economic lot size or minimum cost order quantity, to determine their optimal manufacturing batch and lot sizes or quantities of purchased materials. EOQ is a type of fixed order quantity model that determines the amount of an item to be purchased or manufactured at one time, with the intent of minimizing the combined costs of acquiring and carrying Read More

Mixed-Mode Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.
