Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

TEC Helps Utilities Company Select Best-fit Financials and Human Resources Systems

South Coast Water District (SCWD), an independent provider of high-quality water services based in Laguna Beach, California (US), was experiencing some of the common problems utilities companies face with inefficient IT systems. The company recently discovered that its paper-based processes—such as purchasing and procurement—were not only producing volumes of waste paper, but also creating extra work for its finance and human resources staff. SCWD decided to define its process requirements internally in order to select an appropriate financials system with integrated human resource (HR) functionality so it could operate more efficiently and eliminate the need for paper processes.

Human Capital Supply Chains: Book Review

“Goods are uniform and people are unique.” Too obvious? Maybe, but with the success that supply chain management (SCM) has brought to manufacturers, it’s time to apply the same philosophy to human capital management (HCM). In today’s feature article, TEC HCM analyst Sherry Fox reviews Human Capital Supply Chains, a new book that provides expert advice on what works, what doesn’t, and how a simple SCM history lesson can change the way you manage your workforce.

What Makes Human-centric BPM Different?

Business process management (BPM) is ultimately about people, not technology. While technology enables BPM, it is people who lead, manage, and participate in business processes. However, BPM vendors have not traditionally focused on human-centric needs. A human-centric perspective can transform BPM from a cold automation system into an intuitive, user-friendly tool that eliminates redundancy and accelerates how work gets done.
