Let the (Excess) Inventory Flow!
Because companies focus primarily on new product development and promotion, the problem of excess and obsolete inventory, once addressed, often leads to both the inventory and dollars flying out the door. There should be smarter ways of handling this problem.

ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE INVENTORY: its life cycle. An enterprise can either firmly manage the NPDI phase-in/phase-out processes resulting in low levels of residual inventory or, conversely, it can face large volumes of obsolete product. Whichever the case, the same market pressure applies to both, as prices continue to drop steeply with each month of product obsolescence (see figure 1). In this illustration, the time axis consists of the following phases from left to right: new product introduction, excess active inventory, end of

Software as a Service: Not without Caveats
Software-as-a-service solutions often cannot provide that final twenty percent or so that differentiates a company from its competitors. Of major concern is whether off-premise applications can support complex, global organizations on a constant basis and on strict service level agreements.

ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE INVENTORY: alternative whereby the user enterprise (licensee) pays a fixed fee according to the number of users (or seats) accessing the software (see New Approaches to Software Pricing ). To be fair, both approaches are relatively stable; the customer can budget using a formula while the vendor receives a big chunk of license revenue up front and a steady flow of annual maintenance revenue (usually 15 to 20 percent) thereafter. It is a steady, profitable model that customers and investors both understand, and

Software Leasing Trend Slams Baan Earnings
On October 21, the Baan Company announced a larger-than-expected loss of $25M. Baan's stock price tumbled more than 10% after the loss more than tripled Wall Street's prediction of losses between $8.2M and $1.4M. Revenue for the quarter was $143M, compared to $195M in the same period last year. Sales of new software fell 59% to $36M for the recent quarter, from last year's $86.6M. Baan cited the market's move toward leasing rather than buying software as one reason for its sagging revenue.

ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE INVENTORY: difficult year for the enterprise applications market. Tough market conditions have already been reflected in worse than expected results from business software vendors such as PeopleSoft Inc. and SAP AG. Baan, however, is also battling internal woes. It has reported losses for five consecutive quarters and has undertaken a major restructuring designed to stem losses and clean up its financial practices. Market Impact Baan has been struggling for almost two years to recover from a downward spiral as it

Ineffective container management leads to extra costs, but with Sage ERP X3’s import tracking functionality, business functions are tied together in a single database—enabling real-time access to information and improving productivity.

Zooming into an Inventory Free Flow
FreeFlow, a provider of business services with a patented technology, aims to help companies improve product life cycle profitability by providing a unique, online auction platform where companies can reduce their at-risk and excess inventory.

ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE INVENTORY: process support. The user enterprise is in charge of the key decisions (such as what inventory to liquidate and at what target price), but the business services provider takes care of everything else. There is no software to install and maintain, and with a pay-as-you-use software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, users have no lengthy payback period to justify on a software license. Further, the user s staffers can remain focused on their core tasks, not on managing brokers and juggling spreadsheets, e-mails,
