EDI SECURE FILE TRANSFER SERVER: year to be a credible server supplier. Even though AMD plans to release a dual-CPU chipset, this market segment is a relatively-low-margin segment - not as low-margin as traditional desktop PCs, but significantly lower than four-CPU and eight-CPU systems. Unless AMD has already been working a dual-path scenario with Reliance Computer/ServerWorks, this stretches out that timeframe for the larger machines for at least another year. Although AMD has made great strides with its PC microprocessors, it needs

Gateway Announces Server Appliances
Gateway, Inc. has announced two new Linux-based server appliances, entering a growing market with products aimed at small businesses/offices.

EDI SECURE FILE TRANSFER SERVER: little effect on customers needing general-purpose (GP) servers - server appliances are too specialized to be of interest to the general market. There will also be little interest for users wanting to build up large appliance farms . For those users who have decided they need/want to have a server appliance setup, this announcement provides another vendor alternative. Branch offices may have some interest, but it begs the question of whether the company has an integrated architecture/strategy, and how

Pricing for ProCom s current line is similar to NetApp s, so significant performance benefits will be necessary. The lack of a Linux offering is a deficiency, although not a critical one to most customers. The proprietary nature of the OS for the upcoming model(s) is also a concern. Although ProCom s financial viability is a reasonable concern, we
