Product Configurators Pave the Way for Mass Customization
'Mass customization' is the buzzword of the current decade. Customers demand products with lower prices, higher quality and faster delivery; yet they also want

designing configurable product  can be defined as designing a specific product using a set of pre-defined component types, while taking into account a set of well-defined restrictions on how the component types can be combined. That is, given customer requirements and built-in product descriptions, the configurator will first search from all possible product options and combinations within the restrictions imposed by design constraints, and then generate a valid product configuration exactly matching the customer's specific needs. An

The Best-kept Secret in the Product Lifecycle Management Mid-market

The name Omnify Software may hardly come to mind when one thinks of the product lifecycle management (PLM) leaders, but that might change down the track

designing configurable product  of data involved in designing and manufacturing a product. Employing PLM technology was a strategic initiative to create more efficient product design and development processes by managing product data in a single, secure location, and eliminating silos of information throughout the enterprise. Ease of implementation and depth of capabilities, followed by ease of use, remain key factors when selecting a PLM system. According to the survey, customers selected Omnify over other PLM vendors mainly for the Read More

Configurability Strategy: A Competitive Advantage

To gain a competitive advantage, manufacturing companies that sell complex products are implementing a configurability strategy that provides more options using fewer resources. Learn about the two interrelated phases of a configurability strategy: developing the product—which emphasizes the essential functionality of a product configurator—and executing the lead-to-order (LTO) process in a lean manufacturing environment.

Optimizing the Lead-to-order Process

A superior lead-to-order (LTO) process is essential in today's environment of mass customization. Companies striving to build and maintain market share require an LTO process supported by robust IT and product configuration capabilities. Learn how optimizing your LTO process can help you implement a successful mass customization strategy, and how the benefits of an optimized LTO process relate to lean manufacturing.

designing configurable product  phases of Mass Customization: designing and selling; producing and delivering are the final two phases. The Mass Customization environment is highly variable. Therefore, to produce and deliver a uniquely configured product of the highest quality, to meet aggressive customer schedules, and at a cost that ensures a profit, requires the greatest possible degree of agility the ability to respond quickly to changes in product configurations and volumes, short lead times, and manufacturing processes. Case Study: ThyssenKrupp

ThyssenKrupp manufactures and configures custom elevators. To shorten sales cycles, reduce costs, and simplify ordering for agencies, distributors, and customers, ThyssenKrupp opted to implement the Cameleon Commerce Suite e-commerce platform and product configurator. Sales teams can now generate accurate real-time estimates and plans, and validate configurations for their customers using 3D visualization. Find out how.

Product Lifecycle Management Proving Value at Heinz

In the mid-1990s Heinz was managing their product specifications, formulas, and quality information in the same manner as most companies. Their product information was stored in a variety of disparate systems, spreadsheets, text documents, and paper forms. Learn how it was able to continually leverage product information across the entire life cycle.

New Product Development and Introduction (NPDI)

New product development and introduction (NPDI) is probably the most important process for many companies, but also one of the least understood. While NPDI is responsible for revenues, few companies assign an owner for the whole process. Instead, it is usually driven through a series of functional “silos,” causing delay—and the loss of the original market requirements.

From Idea to Market-ready Product in Record Time

The odds against successful product innovation are long. New products need to win over consumers and convince retailers—a challenging task for many reasons, including saturated markets, a growing variety of products and brands, and shorter product life cycles. To shorten time to market, companies need to integrate all development-related areas, within a single sphere of visibility and influence.

Key Metrics for Monitoring New Product Development

Since our research-driven beginnings, Johnson & Johnson Advanced Sterilization Products (ASP) has continually improved the new product development (NPD) process. Detailed process mapping has revealed three tiers of business metrics, starting with drivers and moving up through execution metrics to business performance metrics. When driver metrics improves, so does business performance. Six Sigma tools helps identify specific metrics at all tiers and the causality linkages among them. Each NPD process step at ASP results in a deliverable, and each deliverable relates to a trade-off triangle (cost-time-resources) and, ultimately, to investment dollars. To track performance, ASP calculates how actual NPD decisions and what-if scenarios affect deliverables, alter investment triangles, and thereby influence business results. ASP uses similar process and tools, including the investment triangles and Six Sigma QFD, to make idea management decisions. The IDweb real-time software environment enables both the NPD and idea management processes at ASP. By deploying the strategic planning, idea management, portfolio and pipeline management, process management, and resource management modules of IDweb, ASP has increased throughput by 20 percent and reduced cycle time by 40 percent.
