Engineer-to-Order (ETO ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

ERP Systems and the ETO Manufacturing Market Part Two: ETO versus Repetitive Differences

ETO-oriented (engineer-to-order) systems must facilitate the near real time transfer of information and complex product knowledge for collaboration across the extended enterprise. It should especially be suited to organizations that seek to maintain complex selling relationships, such as businesses whose procurement and sales functions rely on subcontractors, channel partnerships or a distributed sales force.

definition of engineering to order eto  time of the product definition processes will directly impact on the delivery of the project, and will affect the contract. The company will go through it all over again on the next project, even if the product is similar to the previously delivered one. Thus, there is effectively little or nothing to amortize or recover the costs. For these reasons, far from being ignored, these upfront product definition processes need to be carefully planned and accounted for. Moreover, sophisticated customer Read More

Economic Benefits of PLM-enabled Collaboration

Many of today’s product lifecycle management (PLM)-enabling technologies allow complex information to be shared by dispersed teams of people. Product data management (PDM) technology is used to organize and provide access to your intellectual assets. PLM, its collaborative Product Definition management (cPDm) capabilities, and other solutions can help you go beyond asynchronous data sharing. Find out how.

Mr. Potjewijd pointed out that the implementation of Pro/INTRALINK quickly proved that Pro/INTRALINK''s workgroup capabilities were not enough, but rather a product like PTC''s Windchill was needed to support the product data management requirements beyond the workgroup to the enterprise. This realization led the Automotive Division to invest and purchase Windchill in the 2000 timeframe; thus Read More

The Blurry Line between ERP and PLM in Engineer-to-order (ETO) Manufacturing

Engineer-to-order (ETO) manufacturing needs a high level of integration between ERP and PLM systems. This article points out that ERP and PLM solutions are moving toward each other to achieve more organic data and process connectivity.

While ERP–PLM integration remains a major approach to address this requirement, the functionality gap between ERP and PLM is closing in when both systems are trying to expand their capability into each other''s territory. Although we can''t predict whether the convergence will lead to an organic and ultimate system covering both sides, for ETO manufacturers Read More

Scheduling Resource Demand in a Concurrent Engineering Environment

Manufacturers of capital equipment and highly engineered products face design, production, and delivery obstacles. The most challenging of these activities is scheduling projects and resource demand in a concurrent engineering environment. Learn about a resource scheduling tool that can allow you to put demand on materials, work-centers, and labor as soon as it is known—so you can deliver projects on time and on budget.

Forecasting Total Cost of Ownership for Initial Deployments of Server Blades

For organizations deploying many servers, total cost of ownership (TCO) analyses favor blade over rack-optimized systems. Blade server systems—reducing both capital and operating expenses—exploit economies of scale when deploying servers in volume. Saving power, cooling, and space by more than 25 percent, the blade advantage is particularly relevant for servers working in conjunction with storage area networks (SANs).

CMS Is to Content as SOA Is to Enterprise Applications

There’s no disputing the fact that content management systems (CMS) and service-oriented architecture (SOA) are closely related. From reuse, the ability to loosely couple service and functions, to being able to combine services into a new form, SOA and CMS share many common threads in the enterprise world. Find out how the forces that have made SOA so important today are now doing the same for CMS in web site management.

The High Cost of Change for ERP: What Does it Cost to Keep Up to Date?

Companies are finding it difficult and costly to update and modify enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems after they have been installed. The question isn’t whether an ERP solution supports change, but rather at what cost? How quickly can adjustments be made, and what stresses do such changes place on the organization. To answer these questions, this paper provides results from a survey of senior finance executives.
