Engineer-to-Order (ETO ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Case Study: Western Electronics

As a contract manufacturer, Western Electronics makes assemblies for its customers. This translates into a huge volume of data being exchanged—and an exponentially greater number of engineering changes to manage. The company was challenged to take control over its processes—especially bill of materials (BOM) management—and lead its customers into following best practices. With its new change management solution, the company is confident it has an accurate history and the latest revisions.

Are PLM and Global Sourcing Related? Duh, And How! (Part I)

A number of TEC blog posts have discussed benefits but also the inevitable caveats of white papers (including all too common vendors' self-serving marketing fluff and buzzword verbiage), and about their (un)intended audiences. These posts have even caused some heated debates with other blogging sites and experts on white papers, and I am going to stay away from all that here. My intention here

Has Consolidation Made the PLM Market More Agile? Part Two: Market Impact

The advent and growth of vendors targeting the needs of discrete manufacturing industries proves that the PLM market in this sector has been hot. Agile Software has made a name for itself by providing the tools that support the collaborative exchange of product data, appealing to companies that rely on contractors for the manufacture of its products. For companies whose BOMs change frequently, this integrated capability set has been extremely important, and Agile has thrived in the PLM selection situations requiring extensive external collaboration.

Extensive use of contract manufacturing in the electronics and medical device industries has given Agile Software notable experience with collaborative product development over extranets.
