Scalable NAS and SAN Storage Systems Using Melio Cluster File System With Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2
Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 is frequently deployed in small or midsize applications. And while many customers view it as an excellent small network-attached storage (NAS) solution, they often move to larger, proprietary file server appliances when their needs expand beyond its capacity. This approach, however, adds more expense and complexity. But with Sanbolic’s Melio Cluster, capacity can be added as needed.

Come See the Softer Side of Linux?
Three hardware manufacturers, trying to upgrade the scalability and manageability of Linux servers, announced major Linux server initiatives at LinuxWorld in New York.
: VA Linux Systems: VA Cluster Manager VA Linux Systems (Sunnyvale, Calif.) demonstrated its VA Cluster Manager (VACM), pronounced vacuum by its development team. VACM, which will go into its beta test phase this week, is expected to become generally available sometime in the second quarter. VACM can be used either for managing large clusters of Linux servers or for general-purpose, remote systems management of scattered Linux servers within an organization, according to San Mehat, VACM project manager.
Cobalt Releases Linux Clustering Software
Cobalt Networks, Inc. becomes the latest vendor to jump on the Linux-cluster bandwagon, but does the software they’re touting really qualify as a cluster?
: But, the ability to cluster only two systems is hardly a world-beater. TurboLinux already has a cluster solution (Ref. TurboLinux Clusters - One More Step Taken ) for approximately the same price as Cobalt s (excluding Cobalt s special promo). The difference is TurboCluster has a version that can handle 25 or more nodes, vs. two for StaQware. StaQware does not load-balance, which we always thought was an intrinsic part of clustering. In addition, the failover requires from one to 10 minutes for the
IBM’s DB2 Tops TPC Benchmark List
Leapfrogging the rest of the transaction-processing world, IBM has posted TPC-C results more than tripling the highest current transaction-per-minute figure.
: the world s fastest server cluster for commercial use, recording performance levels that triple the performance of Oracle running on a Sun Microsystems cluster, at one-third the cost per transaction. Using the performance measurement technique agreed to by all computer makers (TPC-C), IBM Netfinity and DB2 Universal Database, Intel Pentium III Xeon Processors and Microsoft s Windows 2000 achieved 440,879 Transactions Per Minute - record-breaking results in server and price performance. IBM, Intel

Collaborative Commerce : ERP, CRM, e-Proc, and SCM Unite! A Series Study: Oracle
There are two ways to build enterprise application solutions: link together disparate, best-of-breed solutions, in which vendors embrace open architectures and inter-application messaging protocols, or find a one-stop-shop with all the software, functionality, and interoperability one could ever ask for. Oracle insists the latter is the best way, and it is their way. But is it best for Collaborative-Commerce? Is their vision of C-Commerce and interoperability yours as well?
: they call Real Application Clusters, which enables multiple copies of the Oracle 9i database to be instantiated across multiple servers, acting as a single database in a cluster, for considerable performance improvement. Customers can add computers to the cluster, and the database software transparently adapts to utilize the new computing resources, significantly improving application scalability and availability without forcing the customer to modify their applications. In addition to Oracle9i Real
Compaq s High-End Wintel-based Rack Servers - Working Hard to Stay #1
Compaq Computer Corporation, the #1 volume manufacturer of PC Servers, both US and worldwide, is fighting a strong challenge by Dell Computer. This note assess the strengths and weaknesses of its four-CPU rackmount servers.
: who need/want a low-profile cluster solution, or who want lots of CPU power in a small box, will find the 6400R a good choice. The 5500R is better suited to high-performance and general-purpose computing, and for customers who want excellent price/performance. Because the 5500R has only five I/O slots available, the customer should consider using this point as a bargaining tool when considering HP as the alternate vendor. If the user absolutely needs more than five I/O slots, the 5500R becomes much less

SCP and SCE Need to Collaborate for Better FulfillmentPart Two: Vendor and User Recommendations.
While the WMS market is expected to continue to grow modestly and faster than the market for many other applications, it appears the WMS add-on solution, customer order fulfillment process management, will experience much higher growth.
: capacity, order complexity (kitting, cluster picking, etc.), service level commitments (i.e. order dates), transportation time/cost, and inventory availability. User Recommendations When considering an advanced WMS/SCE, users should look at the complexity of warehouse processes, as well as the velocity and diversity of activities. A center that picks 200,000 orders over 50,000 SKUs with a great deal of value-added services is an example of complexity that must be addressed. Users should not only consider

Comparing the Total Cost of Ownership of Business Intelligence Solutions
Compare the total cost of ownership of business intelligence (BI) solutions.Find the software information you're looking for.Free white papers! For many companies, traditional business intelligence (BI) software is costly and resource-intensive. So are open source alternatives that require significant configuration and integration. In contrast, software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions can reduce the cost of a BI deployment by providing automation and pre-integration. Compare total cost of ownership (TCO) for traditional, open source, and SaaS BI solutions.

Database Administration Database administration is another key element of cost. For relational databases, this includes: Data load/failure monitoring and management (and perhaps execution) Index rebalancing/tuning Index/table defragmentation Database copy/replication (e.g. test environment versus production) Security and security policy management Database
