Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

The role this API plays gives us a flavor for what is required to interface just two disparate systems and getting them Read More

Strategic Systems International (SSI) needs no special introduction to British process industries (such as consumer products manufacturers and whisky distillers), but it largely remains a well-kept secret elsewhere.

This approach emphasizes the importance of better timing within a production operation, since few successful manufacturing companies—in virtually any sector—have the luxury of just dumping a pile of raw materials into a machine and getting their products out exactly when the customer wants them. A major capability is the ability to spread demand across multiple production sites Read More

All Integrated Point of Sale Software Is Not the Same

Not all integrated accounting and point of sale (POS) systems are created equal. If sales prices aren’t updated, or if on-hand stock isn’t managed properly, you will be at a major competitive disadvantage. Fully integrated accounting systems move information smoothly from one module to another—but what does integration as it applies to accounting and POS software really mean?

Master Requirement Planning and Master Production Scheduling Software: Hard Facts Part Two: Materials Requirement Planning and Master Production Scheduling

Most of the manufacturing software vendors have planning and scheduling software which assume either infinite production capacity for calculating quantities of raw material and work in progress (WIP) requirements or infinite quantities of raw and WIP materials for calculating production capacity. There are many problems with this approach. This paper discusses the pitfalls of this approach and how to avoid these by making sure that the software you buy indeed takes into account finite quantities of required materials as well as finite capacities of work centers in your manufacturing facility.

bom integrated resource planning  is recipe). In a BOM or recipe, the ratio at which raw materials are consumed to produce one unit of the finished product is defined. From this information, total raw materials required for producing ordered quantities of finished products are calculated, but there is a catch. There are two considerations: If capacity of the manufacturing unit as well as capacity of work centers is not taken care of, then the software will generate the wrong quantities of materials requirements. So the software should Read More
