The type II PCMCIA card sports an on-board fingerprint scanner that can catalog multiple fingers per user. The scanner pokes out the side of your laptop, and is a little bigger than a postage stamp. You pop out the fingerprint printer in the same way that you pop out an PCMCIA modem interface, and put your finger on the reader to authenticate. It interoperates

Smart Enterprise Single Sign-on (ESSO)

The increasing number of passwords actually decrease productivity and present a security risk when people get frustrated and write their passwords on a sticky note. This means the application of a single sign-on (SSO) solution provides greater security and improved user-friendliness and productivity. Learn how to increase the security and usability of existing and alternative authentication methods, and how the requirements for user authentication can be realized efficiently and at low cost.

biometric fingerprint reader  the procurement costs for biometric solutions have decreased, on the other hand the error rate of fingerprint recognition, for example, has improved significantly. With Secure SignOn, businesses can select their security devices according to their own requirements, and even retain their existing cards and tokens – the protection of their investments is assured. Even future generations of PKCS#11-based security devices can easily be integrated without further efforts. This is why the solution is fully Read More

The Internet is having an identity crisis. Long regarded as a powerful tool for cost reduction and service enhancement, the Internet is falling short of its promise because of the real and perceived threat of identity theft. Financial losses and insurance costs are mounting, as organizations struggle to protect their information perimeters and improve the strength of their authentication systems to ensure that the authorized user is present during the sign-in process. The widespread use and misuse of passwords as authentication tokens is generally cited as a cause of the accelerating erosion of user confidence and the increasing incidence of identity theft. It is generally agreed that passwords are not enough. Much has been lost, however, in the race toward person-present authentication systems. While the application of passwords is fraught with risk, the introduction of complex authentication infrastructures and cumbersome end user technology has eroded usability and increased the cost of security dramatically. This paper describes a new authentication approach that retains the simplicity and low cost of passwords, while gracefully introducing as much person-present assurance as is required by the application.

Renault-Nissan Selects Kronos for Workforce Productivity in India

Kronos seems to be reaping the benefits from its geographic expansion into India and China. Reportedly, Renault-Nissan Automotive India evaluated lots of local time and attendance (T@A) vendors, but none of them fit the automaker's automation requirements. Kronos was selected for its ability to offer a complete solution including full automation of the punch-to-pay process, real-time

Brave New World-Biometrics in HR

Human resources (HR) professionals often have to deal with errors in recording employees’ effectiveness while accomplishing their jobs. My colleague Ted Rohm gives an overview in this recent blog post of how biometrics can help with these HR challenges. He makes the case that biometrics technology is an option worth considering for certain aspects of business operations. As Ted mentions in his

The idea that something as personal as a fingerprint is stored and used for the tracking of peoples’ movements in and out of workplaces and throughout the completion of tasks, etc. may also cause frustration in employees who feel that there is no way out of the pre-defined and strict checking in/checking out procedure required by a company. Will User Enterprises Ever Get onto an Easy (Support and Maintenance) Street?

Vendors' traditional pricing strategies aren't going to work much longer. Sooner or later, prices will be determined by what the market is ready to bear rather than be based on what vendors think is a profitable way to deliver solutions.

Biometrics for Global Web Authentication: An Open Source Java/J2EE-Based Approach

Recently, companies have been working on integrating biometric verification capabilities using open source single-sign-on techniques. The main idea behind this integration is to take advantage of the infrastructure provided by a Central Authentication Service (CAS) to offer single-sign-on Web authentication, while improving security beyond basic mechanisms based on login and password. Find out more.

What Makes a Good White Paper Good... (part three)

Here is the third point in a series that looks at the key features to consider when writing an IT white paper... so that you not only get your reader's interest, but keep it. Are you part of the problem or part of the solution? Identifying a problem isn’t enough, no matter how much "affinity" is established with the reader (see previous post and Michael Stelzner's site). Is Newer Really Better?

Earlier this month, TEC analyst Aleksey Osintsev posted a short piece about the perceived shortcomings of the venerable IBM AS/400 (now the IBM System i). It seems he touched a nerve with the platform’s defenders, who were quick to offer an opposing view in the post’s comments. The general consensus was that, while it isn’t mainstream, the AS/400 is alive and well. Unfortunately, our commenters

Acronyms Can Simplify Your Life, or Drive You Insane

Acronyms seem really convenient, at first. It’s great using ERP instead of enterprise resource planning, for example. You save precious time (not typing enterprise resource planning a million times) and there’s no way your reader won’t understand what ERP means, right? Well, for ERP this may be true, but all acronyms are not as tidy as they appear. What about BPM, for example? Does it
