Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Understanding SOA, Web Services, BPM, BPEL, and More Part One: SOA, Web Services, and BPM

In the larger schema of things, SOA would espouse general, more abstract concepts of software reusability and encapsulation within certain boundaries (as to then provide access to that software via defined interfaces), Web services would then make these SOA concepts vendor-independent due to their use of generally accepted standards, while BPM and BPEL would be some of the engines making the whole system work.

Still, the advocates of both major platforms/frameworks, Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Microsoft .NET , agree on the future of Web services, and have been building Read More

Convergence, Collaboration, and Culture: The Evolution of Governance, Risk, and Compliance

Traditional governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) programs are siloed initiatives that are not equipped to manage the complexity of the dynamic modern regulatory and compliance environment. Organizations thus need to adopt a programmatic approach and tightly integrate risk management initiatives with ongoing business processes. BI and reporting can help, as well as provide a powerful mechanism for gaining a deep understanding of key factors that impact corporate performance.

Tackling Track-and-Trace: An Overview and Pathway to a Solution

The purpose of track-and-trace regulation in the pharmaceutical industry is to stem the flow of illegal and dangerous counterfeit medicines. These medicines represent a significant public health challenge. No central authority has all the information necessary to track and trace drugs across the global supply chain, much less quantify the extent of counterfeiting. This whitepaper summarizes the key regulations in play on both continents and suggests a compliance solution based on a combined process and technology approach to track-and-trace.

Process Manufacturing: Industry Specific Requirements Part One: Introduction

As with any manufacturing operation, process manufacturing has special system requirements such as formulas, unit of measure conversions, and packaging recipes. However, within the realm of process manufacturing, specific industries have needs that are more critical than others. This article explores these critical needs for the food and beverage, chemical, and a hybrid industry -- textiles, so that you can focus on these requirements when evaluating enterprise-wide software.

Many differences exist, but most can be grouped into two areas: those derived from material issues and those derived from production issues. Process materials are different than discrete materials. Process materials are powder, liquids or gases; they must be confined; and they are more difficult to accurately measure. Process materials are close to their natural sources (farms, mines, etc.) and therefore, are of inconsistent quality. Inconsistent quality means Read More

Time and Attendance: The Core of Managing and Measuring Your Workforce

This paper is based on data from more than 200 organizations in Brandon Hall Group’s 2014 Workforce Management Study. It reviews the evolution of time and attendance, the impact of automation and integration, and the key role that time and attendance solutions play in managing and measuring today’s workforce.

Some of the key findings include:
  • Organizations with fully automated time and attendance saw 67% greater year-over-year improvement in customer satisfaction.
  • Organizations automating time and attendance were 73% more likely to have real-time visibility and reporting on current time and attendance data.
  • Workforce analytics was cited as a top workforce management concern, by 54% of organizations, but just 32% indicate they are using workforce analytics tools regularly.

Understanding SOA, Web Services, BPM, and BPEL Part Two: BPEL and User Recommendations

In a somewhat simplified language, while Web services allow applications to easily exchange and reuse information, it is only when they are orchestrated (coordinated) into long-running business flows or processes that enterprises can realize their true value.

and wood and cork product manufacturing except furniture straw and plaiting materials manufacturing  SOA, Web Services, BPM, and BPEL Part Two: BPEL and User Recommendations Web Services Orchestration Increasing demand-driven responsiveness towards customers'' needs requires a well-coordinated set of IT infrastructure components, since it is no longer good enough to purchase disparate pieces and expect them to simply interoperate. The ideal should be a sort of an independent data exchange that would leverage common metadata and processes to create composite functionality derived from existing application Read More
