AIR TRANSPORT
: Transportation and third-party logistics providers have become embedded in the new economy of the last decade. As a result, unprecedented industry growth and consolidation has driven 3PL providers to find even more efficient and effective processes for running the enterprise, while at the same time managing an explosion in the proliferation of services delivered to customers. In recent years, many businesses have been built that rely completely on 3PLs to manage a significant portion of their business processes. With this strategy, companies eliminate major infrastructure investment, gain access to world-class processes, improve their agility in reacting to a dynamic marketplace, share risks with a strategic partner, and reduce operating costs. To match these new market realities, 3PLs often provide services beyond the traditional – multi-modal transportation (air, land, and sea), warehouse management services, vendor-managed inventory, and labor services. Newer services include pick and pack, inspection, kitting, packaging, labeling, product returns and reverse distribution, packaging and re-packaging, salvage and scrap disposal, and even customer service and telemarketing.Ramco 3PL and Transportation solution is designed to address the expanding array of services offered by these companies. Based on Ramco VirtualWorks, Ramco 3PL and Transportation provides companies with the flexibility they need to rapidly respond to evolving corporate imperatives, regulatory changes, and market conditions. Rather than re-deploy enterprise systems as the company reacts to these changes, the underlying platform can leverage business process models to quickly compose new business assets for true “change on demand.”Ramco 3PL and Transportation is comprised of: Inbound Logistics Outbound Logistics Warehouse Management Vehicle Management Inventory Human Capital Management Financials

Descartes Evolution Yields Revenue Growth But No Profits
Descartes Systems Group recently announced its financial results for the third quarter ended October 31, 1999. Revenues were $10.5 million, an increase of 7% over last quarter, but a decrease of 16% from the same period last year. Descartes attributes the renewed revenue growth to its successful evolution into a provider of customer fulfillment network optimization software. In contrast to its revenues, Descartes posted a net loss of $4 million, suggesting that it has not yet fully recovered from an acquisition spree in 1997 and 1998.

Case Study: Making the Leap to the 4PL Market
Founded in 1905, Ewals Cargo Care (ECC) has a long history as a third-party logistics provider. In 2002, Ewals took steps to target the then-emerging fourth-party logistics (4PL) market. Making that leap required more than just a refocus of its commercial activities, however. Learn how ECC found a solution to plan, optimize, monitor, and manage the flow of goods—with complete command over all transport requirements.

Testability in the NGN
End-to-end performance monitoring on signaling and bearer links, and on inter-networking between service and transport provider domains, are the most complicated and necessary areas of a new management networks paradigm. The testability of next-generation networks (NGNs) and their components should thus be addressed in the context of the performance and fault management functional areas of the telecommunication management network (TMN).

Automation for the New Data Center
Data centers are squeezed by a variety of pressures, such as power consumption, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) requirements, new servers, human error, patching, asset tracking, and more. On top of this, you have to keep up with dynamically changing business requirements. One of the key ways you can address these dilemmas, however, is through server consolidation using virtualization.
