Technology North America Inc. is
a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler
AG. They are located in Palo Alto, CA. But
maintain several other locations in the West
and Mid-West. The Palo Alto division’s
workforce is comprised of mainly “white
collar” workers that include scientists and
engineers. The company’s main focus is to
research and develop new technologies for
the next generation of automobiles. Some
of the new developments include enhanced
safety features, GPS systems, Infotainment
items, Internet and video
capabilities.
THE CHALLENGE

The Palo Alto facility, which is
the collection point for all employee time
sheets, had been using a manual time and
attendance system. Jessica Mansfield, H.R.
manager who has the added duty of weekly
payroll processing, found this process to be
time-consuming, slow and tedious. In
addition to collecting paper time sheets at
her plant, she has the daunting task of
collecting them from the Portland, Los
Angeles, San Francisco, and Michigan
offices.
The manual time collection
process began each week with employees
filling out the timesheets on his/her
computer and printing the form out. The
employee then was responsible for having
his/her manager review and sign the
timesheet. The employee’s last step
required them to take the approved
timesheet and submit it to Jessica. Once
collected, Jessica then had to manually
enter all the information into an Excel
spreadsheet on her computer and again into
the payroll system (Ceridian). Additionally,
Jessica had the time consuming and painstaking
task of calculating California’s complex overtime rules. The potential for
error is greatly increased when using this
method and the amount of time dedicated
each week to this process had a detrimental
affect on both Jessica’s and the employees’
productivity.
According to Jessica, “our time
and attendance system was outdated and
time consuming. In addition to that, there
was little time to devote attention to real
“value added” tasks. We desperately

use and easier for me to manage. In
